The Valley
Forge Striders were formed by a group of runners who enjoy the various
aspects and benefits of running and competing in races. Health, challenge
and the camaraderie are just of few of those rewards. The group agreed
that the most important reason for running it the fun, freedom, and sense
of community that our sport offers.
The idea for the club was
initially discussed on Memorial Day weekend, 1997. While enjoying post
race beverages after the Spring Lake 5 Miler, a race at the Jersey Shore.
We wanted to be identified as a club from the area in which we train, i.e.
Valley Forge, PA. We all have a great respect for the Annapolis Striders,
hence the name Striders. Finally, we wanted to design our own singlets
to wear while competing in out-of-state races.
And so the
Valley Forge Striders were born.
Initially, the club was
"just a shirt". It has since developed into a formal organization. We
have obtained membership in the Mid-Atlantic USATF and have been assigned
an Employer Identification Number from the IRS.
The mission of the club is
to provide an enjoyable, serious training atmosphere for athletes
who want to compete in races, while maintaining the light feelings of a
casual running club. We will strive to establish a tradition of personal
running development as well as establish our club as a racing contender.
Finally, we will always stress the importance of the "fun, freedom, and
sense of community" that has brought us all together.
